This article offers guidance for IT specialists looking to improve their writing skills. Stick to the following tips and you will show better results in writing.

1. Stick to a specific topic

If you are dealing with a writing assignment, you need to remember that the topic is always specific. A paper cannot contain many topics or ideas (thoughts). It reflects only one option, one thought, and develops it. This is the answer to one question.

2. Choose material

When choosing material for a paper, do not immediately discard one that does not fully fit, as sometimes it is difficult to say in advance what you may need in the end. Therefore, it is easier to remove unnecessary things than to search again for the necessary information. For convenience, mark especially important data, keeping links to resources where the information was taken from. When writing, also pay attention to the content: check the accuracy of information from the Internet. Better yet, immediately use reliable sources, the competence of which you will not have to doubt. These include authoritative science sites, articles by scientists, and research centers.

3. Stick to the rules

Read in advance the format rules, requirements for the structure, and content. Study the current format requirements of your particular university, which usually are contained in the guidelines for writing papers.

4. Make an outline

Based on the material that you have collected, develop the backbone of the paper, supplementing it as you fill it with more and more new data.

5. Write easily

If you need to write an essay, establish a trusting style of communication with the reader; to be understood, avoid deliberately complicated, unclear, unnecessarily strict constructions. Researchers note that a good essay requires the writer to be fluent in the topic, to see it from different angles, and present a non-exhaustive, multifaceted view of the phenomenon.

6. Don’t plagiarize

Plagiarism will have the most dire consequences. Before submitting, check the work for uniqueness. If the quotation is too extensive, do a deeper rewrite before the instructor makes a remark and accuses you of plagiarism. In order to prevent the unconscious use of other people’s sources, try to study in detail the work of other authors on the material in question and carefully check what you wrote in different anti-plagiarism systems. Also, when writing a text, immediately mark the sources with links from where the material was taken.

7. Format illustrative material correctly

The main theoretical provisions and conclusions should be illustrated with digital and statistical data from statistical reference books, monographs, periodicals, and other sources. The digital material is presented in the form of analytical tables. For clarity, it is recommended to build diagrams and graphs. All tables, diagrams, and graphs should be numbered. Illustrative material is numbered continuously from the introduction to the conclusion. All tables, factual data, and quotes should be presented with footnotes. If you indicate books and articles in footnotes, do it meeting the same requirements as with a bibliography.

8. Proofread and edit

Take rest after you finish writing in order to view the paper afterwards with a fresh look. Let’s look at what you should pay attention to:

  • Mistakes. Correct errors yourself or use special services for this. The most popular one is Grammarly.
  • Superfluous information. Proofread the text and shorten it without sacrificing meaning. For example, “the application is performing the system configuration” is shortened to “the application is configuring the system.” As you can see, the meaning was not lost, and the phrase became easier to read. Also, delete duplicate information and make wording concise.
  • Paper structure. Check the structure: the paper should be divided into paragraphs; it should have a clear introduction and conclusion.
  • Lost things. Add information if necessary.
  1. Allocate enough time for writing

Do not put off everything until the last day before submitting the paper.
